SEO v GEO
Do you even know what I mean here? Yes? No? Okay confession time, I didn’t really until a short while ago. I had heard both terms and thought I sort of knew what each was, but applying them to my work as a therapist was ...challenging. So I have some research and thought I would the explain (in my own simple terms for therapists) the differences and their relevance to our profession.
SEO is Search Engine Optimisation
GEO is General Experience Optimisation
Is that clear? Okay, more detail required. SEO relates to websites and how the general public find your website predominantly using Google (other search engines are available). GEO is how AI finds its’ information and then promotes visibility. SEO looks for key words and tags used when searching on the internet. GEO looks for authenticity and knowledge to help build trust, you want to show up on AI as the trusted therapist in your area.
For therapists this means you need to not only be aware of what words to use on your website for anyone searching, but also ensuring everything about your message on any platfrom shows the real you and your expertise.
You may decide to just use your website and SEO model, but the time may come when a Google search always uses AI (isn’t Gemini already available for every search?) and if you want to be visible, you going to have to embrace GEO.
Still not sure what to do? Why not ask AI ‘how do I improve my visibility on AI’, and guess what? It will tell you.
